She moved into microbiome research after gaining her PhD from the University of New South Wales in 2016, for a thesis on antibacterial surfaces undertaken at the Brien Holden Vision Institute. Andrea moved to Sydney in 2011, from Melbourne, where she had worked as a lab technician with the Biointerface Engineering group at Swinburne University after completing a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash University in 2008.
